Joe reminded me to do a short write-up about myself... but it ended up not-so-short, so do bear with me ...
I studied environmental engineering for my tertiary education, just because it sounds more interesting than other hard-core engineering. Gradually I became more environmentally concious, but that adds a lot to my bitterness as I see environmental issues from an ethical point of view... if you don't want others to demolish your cozy home, how can you do that to other creatures; if you don't want me to put a hook in your throat, how can you take fishing as a hobby?
From my experience of tertiary education, the system is forcing as much stuff down your throat as possible in the shortest time and that really turns one's appetite off. I did terribly for my one and only programming module in my 1st year and have been having a programming-phobia since then. When I was about to finish my course, my professor approached me to assist him to amend a FORTRAN programme and since I wasn't confident of finding a job immediately after graduation, I agreed to it as the pay might cushion me for a few months. The rest is much like anyone's story of finding something you really like to do as a career.
OK... I've set my career direction, something which I would like to do at least for a couple of years. But getting a programming job isn't easy, especially when all I have is interest but no paper qualification, and all my resumes seemed to be illegally dumped in ocean, not even to the recycle bin. Anyway, here I am, doing my first web-project for the Green Volunteers Network. I would really like to thank Joe for approaching me to take up this project and also helping me to write the contents of most of the pages.
Of course, I still think a lot about all my environmental-ethical issues. But I figure that I can probably acheive more as a volunteer, rather than ended-up doing ISO-14000 or becoming a safety officer.
